biblical help to diffuse volatile situations

Sooner or later you will have a situation develop in your ministry that comes to a boil and may even begin to boil over.  Guiding your flock with a steady hand in such situations is so very important.  At times, conflict is needed - even healthy.  For example, when the Apostle Peter was giving too much credence to the Judaizers in Galatians 2:11, Paul "withstood him to the face."

There is a definite time to stand up for what is right - especially when the Gospel itself is at stake.  There are other times that God calls us to be peacemakers and to diffuse volatile situations.  Thankfully, there is biblical help for approaching these situations.  We certainly need God's wisdom and discernment to recognize the best response in each case.  In the New Testament, few churches had faced such bitter division as did the Corinthians.  Here are a few tips from 1 Corinthians Chapter 1 - Paul's prescription for restoring unity in Corinth that give valuable insight for conflicts we face today.

Week In Review: 09/16 - 09/21

One of the main categories of blog posts I intend to create here is a “week in the life of a pastor.”  Ministry rides that strange line between the necessity of planning ahead and days that can be full of surprises.  For those who sense a call into ministry, a helpful way to give you a taste of things is for you to experience it as I experience it.  It’s as close to shadowing as we can get via Internet.  I had hoped to do this through video, but I came down with some head congestion, which would make it difficult for you to understand me.  And I had to save my voice for the weekend.  So, here is my Week in Review for last week.  Stay tuned for video content

In one of those chats where you sit and talk with your wife about your day, my wife and I were discussing a common phenomenon in every church - namely, that people vote with their checkbook, their money.  You and I would readily agree that legalism hurts and kills a church.  But something that had never before occurred to me was this particular connection between legalism and the church's cash flow and what that connection means for leading a church.

Ministry Moves - Accepting a New Call

Some denominations have a guaranteed appointment system, and some pastors are moved around by a district-level bishop.  Baptist pastors, however, usually apply independently for a vacant role (or are approached out of the blue) and "candidate" for a position.  There is often a questionnaire, an interview, a trial sermon, and a vote.  A commonly asked question has to do with what sort of percentage a pastoral candidate should seek before accepting a call from a church.  Ideally, the vote would be unanimous, right?  But that isn't all that common.  Is it biblical to draw a line in the sand?  How do you even think about this issue?  Does it just boil down to a coin toss?
